Lap-Lap, Food Garden, + Lenaukas Village.

Experience life in a subsistence village with Lap-Lap making and village gardens.

Tour Features.

Making Lap-Lap.

Lap-lap is the mainstay of Ni-Vanuatu cuisine, the most valued, and perhaps the most intricate Ni-Vanuatu meal to make. Unlike earth pit cuisine elsewhere in the Pacific, lap-lap is prepared in stages in much the same way a detailed layered cake is prepared. A base prepared from either taro, yam or cooking banana is prepared followed by layers of leafy greens, smothered in copious helpings of coconut milk. Various versions abound and cooked meat if available can also be added. Finally, the lap-lap is bound up in a leaf similar to that of a banana leaf imparting extra flavour during cooking and put into the earth oven to cook for an hour or so.

Preparing lap-Lap is Social.

The process of making lap-lap is a deeply social process and important within village environments to reinforce relationships, discuss matters affecting the tribe, and organise village work for the days ahead. Making Lap-lap generally requires a communal effort, and village ladies will prepare it together. When cooked and opened, it is shared amongst a collective group.

Lap-Lap’s importance is highlighted by the fact that most villagers will partake only one formal meal a day, with breakfast generally being either leftovers from the night before or hastily prepared rice, while lunch will consist of pawpaw, banana and other fruit that can be readily accessed from village gardens. Villagers will arise early, eat individually and will be out working in the gardens before the heat of the day settles in.

In helping with making the lap-lap, visitors get to experience Ni-Vanuatu sociality and enjoy the happy banter that is associated with it. While the actual preparation is traditionally restricted for women, the men prepare the fire, heating the stones, and enjoying the time together roasting banana on the hot stones.

Subsistence Village Gardens.

Around 70% of all Ni-Vanuatu survive through subsistence living, and the hub of daily life surround the village gardens on which life depends. On the more isolated islands, an even greater portion of people rely on what they grow for sustenance, goods to barter with, and display of accumulated wealth. Yams are the king of stables, but generally require favourable soils and weather and consequently, taro patches are the mainstay of many village gardens. Taking a walk around a village garden will uncover a wide selection of vegetables & fruit, along with herbs and some spices.

More recently introduced vegetables such as cabbages, beans, broccoli, zucchini, bok choy, have found themselves being cultivated in the rich volcanic soils, and are slowly gaining acceptance amongst local peoples. A further development is intensive coffee growing that is occurring throughout the highlands region, and its uptake has seen the development of other cultivated crops. However, Cyclone Pam destroyed nearly all food crops in March 2015, and coffee production is only now coming back into significant production.

Tannese Villages.

Most villages in Tanna are relatively small, possessing around 30-50 people in loosely related family groups. Nearby, villages will consist of related families and collectively will belong to the same tribe. Having a subsistence life means that villages appear poor to outsiders, mainly due to the fact that little of what they do enables them to earn money for western clothes, pay for school fees, or purchase equipment that would make their life easier. Despite this, Ni-Vanuatu are both proud and content with their way of life and provided the right introductions are made are happy to show visitors their world.

Lenaukas Village.

Lenaukas village is a poor village that centres around seven brothers and their families, with the surrounding land being the kastom ground of their father. The village possesses a substantial nakamal and consists of a collection of houses constructed from both traditional materials, along with corrugated iron and tarps. Visitors gain insights into the authentic way of life of Tannese people. Children, laughing & playing can be seen (when not at school), and their curiosity and mischief-making are a feature.

Northern Tanna Revealed

First (Lenuanatuaiu) Waterfall Walk.

A unique aquatic experience that provides surreal highlights.

Tour Features.

Travel Along Tanna island's Northeastern Coast.

Participants are transferred to boat near to the airport and transported along the coast to the islands northern tip where the Blue cave is located. The rugged shoreline incorporates large coral outcroppings that are interspersed with small localised beaches, and a coastal terrain backdrop that rises sharply, covered in thick tropical bush. Except for an occasional village on isolated beaches that are constructed in traditional Tannese fashion, the area typifies that encountered on more remote Melanesian islands.

At the Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is located at a prominent promontory at the Tanna's northern tip and a significant Northern village occurs on the plateau some distance back from it. On a fine day, the water leading to the Blue Hole itself takes on a vivid, rich hue that announces the presence of the natural formation.

Entrance to the cave is through an opening to the sea which is subject to tidal levels, and the opening may be completely below the prevailing sea level or at a level where visitors can comfortably paddle through. Cave guides, provided by the kastom owners are present to help visitors through.

Inside the cave, the mood mirrors that of the day outside, determined by sunlight pouring through the oculus-like skylight the arched roof structure. On bright sunny days where the sun is high in the sky, strong shafts of sunlight can be witnessed, providing a cathedral-like appearance that is accompanied by a reflection of the sky in the still water of the cave. The effect is varied and also depends on the season and tides, ensuring that each visit is different from the last. On overcast days the mood of the cave is more sombre, but can produce a more surreal atmosphere.

Snorkelling on Coral Reefs on the Return Trip

While visitors do not generally come to Tanna for watersports, there are some excellent coral reefs near to the pickup/return points, and depending on weather, tides and time, there may be an opportunity have a brief snorkel amongst the tropical waters before returning.

Immersed in Tannese Landscapes

Middlebush Kastom Walks + Black Magic

Take a day and immerse yourself in the, culturally rich, tribal life unique to Tanna Island.

Tour Features.

Kastom Trails on Tanna Island.

Disputes between neighbouring tribes have been an integral part of Ni-Vanuatu life in the distant past, and led to serious dislocation of inter-tribal interactions affected trading, island wide-ceremonies, and marriage arrangements. However, an innovative system of kastom trails was mediated by the island’s high chiefs that reducing the occurrence of disputes, laying down safe ground, and bring in protocol.

Kastom trails delineate tribal boundaries, are accepted as neutral territory, and pass close to significant tribal villages so that each tribe knows who is traversing across their land. While Tannese used strict etiquette at each village, this has lessened in recent years.

The Middlebush Kastom Trail.

The importance and development of Kastom Trails is a fairly unique feature of Tanna Island. As with most transport routes, a system of major routes cross longitudinally over the island and include most of the coast, while a network of interweaving minor trails extend out over most of the island . The Middlebush trail is specifically chosen to provide visitors with a selection of countryside to experience, and passes through different sized villages. Along the way Tannese go about their normal lives, and visitors may come across villagers preparing a daily meal, getting ready for a special ceremony, or they may all be at work in their subsistence gardens. The walk aims to present the routine of Melanesian life in an authentic manner.

It is to be noted that the walk does not start on a Kastom Trail but traverses down a short steep slope, which most find fun to do, followed by a walk upstream through a spring-fed stream until connecting onto the trail itself.

If requested, the walk can be shortened and pickup can be made shortly after the breadmaking.

Black Magic.

The Black Magic show has been a popular activity for many years, and attendance is generally limited to a few visitors, making it a very personal experience. A series of encounters occur around a large banyan tree (spiritually revered by Ni-Vanuatu), which bring visitors closer to aspects aligned with Kastom beliefs of the past. Contrary to its name, no black magic is involved (not being a characteristic of Tannese kastom), and most involve quirky or funfilled activities.

Because parts of the show depend on instant reaction and surprise, little can be described save that most visitors will come away with a smile on their face.

Tannese Bread-Making

Ni-Vanuatu have a diet that is traditionally based on starchy stables, and some introduced foods have been readily adopted and furnished with a truely Tannese identity. Bread has been widely embraced and bread-makers are highly respected in the community. The peculiar small concrete bread ovens dot the countryside and can be found all over. Unlike the light french baguettes, Tannese bread is configured as standard loafs, possessing a full flavour, and totally delicious. It is intriguing to see how the art of bread-making has been easily adapted.

Travelling along a coastal track, visitors explore the western coastline at the end of the Whitegrass plains, where small communities are interspersed with a number of churches, coconut palms and tropical bush. Wide beaches have collections of outrigger canoes, used primarily by local Tannese for fishing, pulled up to the beach fringes. Children are often seen playing in the waves at various spots, always with a smile and a cheeky wave.

Heading into Blackmantown, the central market is popular amongst local Ni-Vanuatu and also serves as a community hub where people get together to socialise, hear what is happening on the island and organise transport back to their villages. The marketplace has a vast array of both traditional staples such as yam, taro, banana, “kumula” and bush greens, along with introduced fruit and vegetables with citrus being prominent. Further interest is created with the market being situated on the coast near to the breakwater where the various cargo ferries offload goods that are sold in the local stores.

What's in a Name : Blackmantown

Unusual for the islands is the nature of the surrounding area of grocery, butchery and hardware stores, all owned and run by local Tannese. The hum of the commercial area has an atmosphere that is uniquely Ni-Vanuatu, with no Chinese or “outsider” stores present. In fact, the island itself is relatively devoid of anyone outside of the island itself, with outsiders consisting mainly of a very small number of Australian, New Zealand, and French missionaries and accommodation management. While Tannese are affable, hospitable and very interested in the outside world, they are also proud of their island with the name “Blackmantown” being coined by the Tannese themselves.

Yakel Kastom Village.

While there is a small number of “kastom” villages, the original and foremost is located at Yakel located in the lower slopes surrounding the earlier volcanic mountains to the south-east of the island. Kastom villages that are open for tourism provide a glimpse of how Melanesian life was lived not so long ago, and much of the customs and traditions on display are still retained in varying degrees by most villages on Tanna today. The setting and slices of life presented at Yakel remain true and authentically represent these parts of kastom that are valued by Tannese. It is of note, however, that western influence has permeated most regions of the island in some form or another and most villages now live their lives in a duality of “worlds”. Almost all villagers own mobile phones and wear western clothes, and so today, traditional outfits seen in Kastom villages are normally reserved for ceremonies and more formal occasions.

The Importance of Yakel.

The trip to Yakel takes approximately 20 minutes from Blackmantown, and the village itself is centred on a large flat formal meeting area or Nakamal. Yakel has come to the attention of the media back in time as the area surrounding it is the home of the Prince Philip Cargo Cult which still has a small following. It is also the location of the four Tannese travellers that were the centre of the UK television series “Meet the Natives”, centred around the Melanesian tribesmen’s thoughts regarding the modernity that they were exposed to while visiting various families in England, especially how modern UK life contrasted with their own customs and culture. More recently, the village was the setting for the widely acclaimed independent movie “Tanna” which delved into the generational conflict that occurs within communities that observe strict kastom rules.

Contrasts of Island Life.

The tour provides visitors with insights into the contrasts in the way Tannese live, from the distinctly traditional displays found in Kastom villages, through to the more modern remote island adaption to outside influences.

Second (Lenuingao) Waterfall and East Coast Beach Walk.

Experience an authentic Slice of Life on a remote Vanuatu Island.

Tour Features.

Authentic Melanesian Landscapes & Island Life.

Experience authentic walks through some landscapes that have existed in harmony with mother nature for hundreds of years. Local communities have recognized the importance of the land and have nurtured and developed growth of local flora to provide what they need to sustain their way of life in a manner which has enhanced and protects the survival of local habitats.

The walks showcase many of the unique species of trees, plants and their various nuts and fruits. Stands of Giant Banyan Trees abound, invoking images of “Avatar” the movie. Parts of the local bush, have remained untouched for hundreds of years. Participants will also see the effects of catastrophic events such as Cyclone Pam, and how quickly tropical rainforest regenerates.

Kastom bush walks and Ecotours are guided by experienced local Ni-Vanuatu guides, who are knowledgeable, friendly, and only too willing to accommodate participants requests where possible.

Lenuingao Waterfall.

Lenuingao Waterfall is one of the major spring fed waterfalls that exist on Tanna Island located close to Louniel Beach and an obvious focal point for the few Ni-Vanuatu that live along this coast fringe.

Spectacular views of the waterfall itself, its surrounding terrain, and the east coast beaches can be seen at the top drop-off of the waterfall, along with views of the somewhat flat Aniwa island that is famous for its citrus fruit. On a Clear day, the uplifted volcanic island of Futuna can be seen with its distinctive and unusual cutoff top, which is home to Polynesian peoples whose culture is differentiated to that of the Melanesian Tannese.

The pool at the Waterfall's base is a popular swimming hole for local villagers and provides visitors with a cool refreshing interlude on the walk.

Tanna Island's East Coast Louniel Beach.

Mt Yasur Volcano is situated on the south-eastern sector of Tanna, and prevailing wind and sea currents have crafted a series of black sand beaches along the islands east coast. Depending on coastal deposition, parts of the beach can be hard-pan, while other sections have characteristics akin to freshly fallen powder snow (in mountainous regions). Being exposed, the surf can be wild, and the waves should be treated with the utmost respect. Depending on time and tides, there is the opportunity to swim in a large natural swimming hole protected by coral formations.

Periodically, underwater volcanic vents and fumaroles located along the coastal emit bursts of magma into the surrounding ocean, which solidifies instantly trapping steam and volcanic gases within itself, creating masses of pumice pebbles. As a result of the trapped gases, the pumice is often half the density of water and therefore floats until it is washed up on nearby beaches. Louniel beach is often carpeted with masses of pumice pebbles which contrasts visually with the black sand that it overlays. An impressive vista is presented at dawn and dusk when the long shadows of the pumice over the wide expanse of the beach can be stunning.

Explore

Untouched tropical landscapes, along with a mix of coral & volcanic elements.

Culture

Approximate Timeframe.

The duration of the walk takes between 4-6 hours, depending on the makeup of participants (children and adults), general fitness levels, and what things of interest are encountered along the way. Participants are able to swim at the pool at the base of the cool spring-fed Lenuingao waterfall, and later at a beach swimming-hole if the tides are favourable. Extra time can be taken to investigate Banyan trees, talk to occasional Tannese walking the trails, visit food village food gardens when they are happened upon, and take in the varied makeup of the volcanic east coast beach.

Pickup and Dropoff from Accommodation on Tanna Island .

Costs includes pickup and drop-off from accommodation on the Whitegrass coast near to the airport - Zone A (Airport zone). For pickup and drop-off from accommodation near Lenakel -Zone B <lenakel zone) a small surcharge applies to cover the extra distance.

Morning or Afternoon walks are available.

The walk can either be commenced first thing in the morning (pickup at 8.00 am), carrying through until after mid-day (finishing walk between 12.30-2.00 pm), or late morning (pickup at 10.30 am) and continuing over the course of the afternoon (finishing between 3.30-5.00 pm).

Where the walk is booked for an early morning start (Morning Booking), the walk is commenced soon after arrival (walk start approx 8.30 am) at the escarpment property in Middlebush after a 30-minute drive into the highland's region. At the finish of the walk in the early afternoon, lunch is provided at Rachel's restaurant. Participants are returned to their accommodation mid to late afternoon.

Where the pickup occurs late morning (Afternoon Booking), an early light lunch is provided before setting off on the walk at around 11.30 am, which then extends through most of the afternoon and finishes at dusk. Participants are subsequently returned to their accommodation afterwards.

Fitness and Health Levels.

The walk is designed for people in relatively good health and moderate fitness. Excepting for a small portion of steep terrain adjacent to Lenuingao Waterfall, the walk is over a fairly easy gradient. However, to enhance authenticity, the walk traverses Un-Formed trails and participants may need to duck under the odd branch or climb over one or two fallen trees.

Most of the time the walk is downhill, with stops to talk about various aspects of the tropical bush, edible plants and nuts, along with Kastom use of plants. The walk in the bush itself is under the tree canopy and exposure to the full sun is not experienced until strolling along the beach. Respite is also provided with opportunities to swim at the waterfall and a local beach pool (depending on tides).

With most of the time taken ambling downhill, clearly the way back is uphill, and the walk follows a 4WD track back up to the starting point, which has a moderate and persistent upward gradient. While the track is easy to follow, coming at the end of the walk, this part certainly requires some exertion. If time permits, the guide may duck off the trail to show participants stands of Banyan trees.

Inclusions.

The Tour includes transport to and from accommodation (noting a surcharge from Zone B- Lenakel zone). A local guide, who is well acquainted with the local trail is provided, and who, like all Tannese is friendly and amiable. Generally, most Ni-Vanuatu (in rural situations) will carry a long machete, which can be disconcerting to visitors at first. Machetes are the swiss army knives of the Pacific, and participants will soon be in awe of the dexterity of the guide, and the variety of uses they are put to including clearing the way ahead, opening coconuts, or preparing other edible plants.

Lunch at Rachel's restaurant is also provided. Freshly boiled spring-water is also available for participants to fill their flasks for the walk.

Exclusions.

Water bottles themselves are not provided and each participant must bring flasks suitable for a lengthy walk, and a small backpack or similar to carry this, along with their snacks, and incidentals.

What to Bring.

Firstly, given that the Tour is lengthy adequate water should be taken and snacks. Boiled spring-water is available at Rachels restaurant (but not flasks). Visitors should ensure that they have suitably closed-in footwear for walking on unformed tracks. Depending on the weather robust flip-flops may be suitable, and it is recommended that these are bought in any case, as are swimming trucks. However, participants should gauge carefully what they should bring and each participant should not bring any more than they can carry themselves (no beach towels but perhaps a lightweight towel per couple).

Depending on the time of year a suitable raincoat may be needed, and as always, participants should dress to suit the weather. It is recommended that sunscreen is taken along with a cap or hat when walking along the beach.

Importantly, participants should bring a suitable camera to take those memorable shots along the way.

Views of Tanna Landscapes
Volcanic Ash Plain.
Port Resolution.
Shark Bay.

Mt Yasur Big Day Out - Mt Yasur, Port Resolution, & Shark Bay.

Our most popular tour that provides visitors with a Full Day's experience that makes Tanna Island unique.

Tour Features.

Views of Tanna Island Landscapes.

Leaving by about 8.30-9.00 am, visitors travel via 4WD over unsealed roads, through the central Tanna highlands where various stops are made to view spectacular outlooks of both Mt Yasur Volcano and the east Tanna coastline. Passing the Ash plains, the opportunity is taken at various vantage points along the Ash Plain itself to view Mount Yasur and its surrounding panorama.

Most Pacific islands posses relatively flat and accessible coastlines, and rugged inhospitable mountainous interiors, covered in thick tropical bush. Typically, on such islands, Melanesian peoples develop extensive village networks around coastal perimeters, leaving inland regions relatively untouched. However, Ni-Vanuatu peoples on Tanna Island have settled uniformly over all parts of their island, and some of the richest agricultural lands in Vanuatu can be found in the Tannese highlands. The continual deposition of volcanic ash by Mt Yasur has provided a rugged but relatively flat central highlands allowing the development of village-based coffee plantations, along with other horticultural products.

The trip over the highland region provides views of interior landscapes that are dotted by Tannese villages, largely dependent on subsistence agriculture. Tannese communities possess a way of life that has remained unchanged over many generations.

Mt Yasur Volcanic Ash Plain.

The Volcanic Ash Plain is the remains of an extensive lake that existed at the base of the mountain until broke its banks many years ago causing devastation at Tannese villages below it. What remains is an extensive plain of volcanic ash that presents a surreal picture of flat areas alternating with substantial "dune" regions, along with extensively hard baked and cracked ground. The unusual landscape presents an exceptional vista, that in the right conditions can present itself as an amazing experience. At the same time, the fineness of the ash allows it to be whipped up by strong winds into localised eddies resembling miniature sandstorms.

When conditions permit, the Tour enables visitors to amble over parts of the ash plain where the terrain can be briefly explored, the stream running through it investigated, and various angles of the surrounding landscape viewed.

Port Resolution Inner Harbour.

Travellers continue along an extremely rugged road to the Main bay of the inner Port Resolution Harbour. Here, visitors are met by a village guide to view the volcanic fumaroles along the northern arm of the Port Resolution Harbour (village fee included). Various natural springs occur along the inner beach and a short trek further up the arm of the harbour leads to steaming volcanic pits, and scratchings that provide the local villages with various costume dyes. From elevated positions, good views of Port Resolution and beyond can be seen. Port Resolution, while being relatively undeveloped and remote is a major landing stage for yachties traversing the Pacific sailing circuit. At the height of the sailing season up to fifty intrepid boats can be seen taking respite in the harbour. For all of this, Port Resolution provides an ideal locality to view traditional ni-Vanuatu houses.

Port Resolution Lunch and Time at White Beach.

Subsequent to the inner harbour tour, visitors are taken through Port Resolution to the oceanside White Beach, on the outer arm of the harbour. Lunch is served (your care) either at a local establishment situated in a traditional building in the village or adjacent to the white beach itself. Lunch can either be chicken or omelette based served with rice and vegetables and is an enjoyable fusion of traditional and modern Ni-Vanuatu cuisine.

Following lunchtime is taken to relax at White beach, swim in the surf, or just take time to take in all the local sights. The beach is popular with travelling families and local Ni-Vanuatu children can be seen playing on the beach and in the surf. The beach is also a great place to take a walk, have a look at the scenery and just enjoy the offerings of an exquisite tropical beach. In perfect weather, time just melts away and depending on the preferences of travellers, itineraries can be adjusted so that a greater or lesser amount of time is spent at the beach.

Shark Bay and Captain Cook Rock.

Back in the 4WD after lunch, the tour carries on down various local tracks until arriving at Shark Bay, where you view a boisterous and wild bay from an elevated vantage point, best no later than early to mid-afternoon to ensure that the water is not shielded from the sun. The Bay is noted for viewing sharks, which come into the bay in significant numbers, especially during the cooler months of the year, for the warmth caused by underwater hot water spouts located in the bay. As with all things to do with mother nature the appearance of sharks is not guaranteed and sightings are more prevalent during colder months of the year. Regardless a visit to the bay provides great views of the Southern Tannese coastline and a walk out along the local promontory is rewarded with exceptional views of Captain Cook Rock that can be seen in an adjacent Bay.

The Pinnacle of the Days Activities - Mt Yasur Volcano.

Mt Yasur is the obvious highlight of the day and travellers are taken to the mountain entrance at around 3.30-4.00 pm in compliance of the requirements of the mountain administration. Mt Yasur is a spectacle that rarely disappoints, not only providing a visual display but instead, a physical exhibition that reverberates through every part of those that experience it. The whole of body encounter could never be simulated by multi-media technology and is remembered forever by those who visit the mountain.

Despite the obvious danger of flying magma, the mountain has proven to be relatively benign. As nonsensical as that statement sounds, injuries are relatively rare, although time on the mountain should be treated with the utmost respect. Behaviour is strictly in accordance with Mountain administration requirements. The closure of night-time viewing is at the discretion of the administration, at which time the tour party commences its trip back to guests accommodation taking between 1and a half to two hours.

Approximate Timeframe.

Pickup generally occurs between 2.00-2.30 pm, with the duration of the tour being approximately 6 hours. The travel time to the mountain is generally 1.5 -2.00 hours each way. Time at the mountain does vary at the discretion of the Mountain Guides, the government appointed administrators of Mt Yasur who will also provide an initial presentation.

Pickup and Dropoff.

Costs includes pickup and dropoff from accommodation on the whitegrass coast either close to the airport (Zone A), or near to Lenakel (Zone B), or alternatively for guests staying at Tanna-Adventures accommodation in Middlebush, Central Highlands. A surcharge applies for pickups/dropoffs at other locations due to the high cost to run vehicles.

Inclusions.

The Tour includes transport to and from accommodation (as above) including the driver/guide, and entrance fees to Mt Yasur. The Mountain Guides provide visitors with otherequipment while on the mountain itself.

What to Bring.

Firstly, given that the Tour is lengthy and visitors do not generally arrive back at their accommodation until about 8.00 pm, adequate water should be taken (generally available from accommodation) and snacks, especially for children). Visitors should ensure that they have suitably closed-in footwear for being on rough terrain (however specialised tramping boots are not generally required).

Depending on the time of year warm clothes may be needed (definitely between May through to November) including a windcheater or raincoat. While the Guides provide some torches it is recommended that visitors bring their own as it makes walking on the rim much more manageable, and a must for coming down off the mountain.

Prices are Contingent on Entrance Fees at 1st April.

Our Prices are made up from a number of items, attraction entrance fees included.

In recent years, the Mt Yasur Volcano administration has taken to increase entrance fees at extremely short notice, effective at 1st April year to year. Other Kastom owned attractions have subsequently followed suit. Consequently, our costs are "Contingent", and any differential in entrance fees + boat trip, either side of 1st April are payable as an extra to the booking.

Increases due to "Contingent" entrance fees affect very few people, and are only relevant to bookings that are made prior to 1st April for a scheduled date occurring after 1st April. The majority of bookings are made after 1st April and are not affected in any way.

Giant Banyan, West Coast, Blackmantown.

An Ancient Giant Banyan Tree
Scenic Coastal Fringe Excursion
Blackmantown named by Man-Tanna
Tanna's Central Marketplace

Giant Banyan, West Coast, & Blackmantown.

An journey to Giant Banyan, travel along the West Coast, & experience Tannese Life in Blackmantown.

Tour Features.

Travel into the Hills to Explore the Giant Banyan.

The Tour begins by travelling into the hills of the West Coast, through substantial groves of mango trees and yam cultivation, with panoramic views over the rolling landscape and east coast beaches. The 4WD track takes visitors past the overgrown airport used during World War II into a secluded valley that at first conceals any presence of the ancient Banyan tree.

A short walk through overgrown tropical bush continues to hide the Banyan, until, at the bottom of the trail it's monumental extent and splendour is unveiled. The Giant Banyan was said to have been a sizeable tree when Captain Cook visited Tanna in August 1774, and visitors immediately gain an intense feeling of history, blended with immense cultural mystic. Not only has the myriad of trunks and branches spread themselves over a wide area, but twisted root systems have created a series of amphitheatric platforms around the base of the tree.

Walking around the tree is a pretty amazing experience and can take quite a while with awesome viewing from all angles. The strength and span of the huge branches, being supported by a network of trucks makes for stunning viewing. The Guide shows off his prowess at swinging from limb to limb using one of the many hanging vines, and invites participants to do the same.

Island Coffee Processing.

The soils and climate of Tanna island are particularly suited to coffee cultivation, and a network of small locally owned coffee plantations are spread out across the central highlands region. While initial drying occurs in the villages scattered around Middlebush, grading and processing occurs at a couple of locations along the west coast. Here, at certain times of year further drying occurs, defective and damaged beans are removed, with the remainder bagged ready for export.

The West Coast Beaches and Blackmantown.

Blackmantown or the Lenakel excursion, starts with a ride along the beach road to see the dugouts, and have a look around what makes up the major township of Tanna. The excursion spends time at the markets (Open most weekdays but traditionally Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays), where travellers gain a great appreciation of what is grown, collected and of value on a remote Melanesian island. It is a great place just to sit and observe local Tannese people going about their daily routines. It is notable that Blackmantown is a term proudly coined by local Tannese signifying that they control all commercial activity on the island (and not outsiders).

Depending on whether the tour occurs in the morning or afternoon, there are a number of restaurants serving a wide selection of meals based on locally grown produce.

Explore

Eastern beaches & and their elevated coastal landscapes behind.

Culture

View coastal living, the central market, and life around the main Tannese town.

Vista

Blue Cave Tour

Cathedral-like Cavern

Panoramic Sights
Northern Tanna Revealed

Blue Cave Tour.

Explore

Traverse northern coast, and check out limestone cavern.

Culture

Tour centres on island physical attributes.
